PARTS OF SPEECH: Nouns

Lesson: A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea. CAPS learners must identify all types of nouns and use them correctly.

Types of Nouns:

  • Common noun: book, school, dog

  • Proper noun: Johannesburg, YouthPlug

  • Abstract noun: courage, happiness

  • Collective noun: team, class

Examples:

  • Common: “The dog barked loudly.”

  • Proper: “Cape Town is beautiful.”

  • Abstract: “Her happiness was obvious.”

  • Collective: “The team won the match.”

Activity:

  • Underline all nouns in the sentence: “The children played in the park and enjoyed their games.”
